How about multiple icons in the same gutter? I really dislike how Atom handles this with multiple gutters just sitting there taking up space.

I fully agree with you, it will be much better 
But something says me that it’s difficult to implement.

The gutter could still feature a single column (1 icon per line, or 2 max so it doesnt get too wide), but add a narrow column next to it that can be colored per line (ex: to denote a new | deleted | modified line) like Visual Studio does. And perhaps another gutter next to the minimap for other uses.
