Will SublimeText + SublimeMerge go open source for right price?

#1

I absolutely hate Sublime Text and merge and have hated them for a long long time. I want them to go extinct and not live on in eternal history as tools our descendants will use. We must put a stop to this now, by making Sublime go open source so it will die a swift death.

What $ would convince Sublime Team to sell out and destroy this piece of crap software?

Nothing wrong with longevity … I use tools aligned with Subl which go back to Macromedia days and earlier

I never understand flame-bait posts like this. What do you get out of it? Do you feel some moral victory by screaming into the wind, and throwing your toys out the pram?

Don’t like these tools? Don’t use them. Just be civil, and walk away.

Don’t you understand him being the only person on earth to be able to judge software quality?

Honestly, there are numerous other software packages I’d wish to die before, ST and SM.

 He is joking. Funny guy.

Especially in the age of AI, good software should continue to be kept closed source rather than open source.

Grow up. It is just software, not something that is going to hurt you. Just change the channel, don’t use it you idiot.

I’m not sure we understood the poster and Sublime Text and Sublime Merge wranging on thin ice with popup dialogs and licensing and then inconvenience on major version change… Most of us know about popular plugin authors not given a license for next version and that is wrong IMHO

I use both Zed and Sublime depending on project, but I don’t use Electron editors

Zed on rust GPUI is still not as fast as Sublime on my laptop

Maybe the secret should not be revield and stay as is (for which I’m fine) as long as it is actively delevoped

We should cut the OP more slack since he has written favourably in past. Who else uses Distraction Free Mode?
Be open minded inquisitors.

He is from Hawaii and I read this (and I’m in U.K.)

It might be the GOA warrior season.

Right, distraction free zen mode, can be accustomed separately if one wants

Everything seems perfect until you need to pay next major version, that was my concern

I don’t understand the humor in this post, to be honest.

Often mind sets do not align (not so much humour/humor but viewing a problem from a different perspective). Pull yourself out of the coding gallery at times. Decades ago I got visual inspiration from visiting museum and art gallery.

I am sorry @breck7,

Some of us don’t get the joke and I think those who don’t take themselves too seriously. Many of us have nothing really to complain about ST and SM. As a defaulted double licence holder, I am checking out Zed to see if it can get to my “flow” when I am in ST and SM.

So, yes, let us make it open source now for some $$.

@klo is 100% on point.

sublime text/merge have gotten so much worse with these stupid popups… no i will never give another penny to support your closed source development efforts.

i told you years ago that you should be like https://cap.so/ … Richie is from UK and started Cap against hugely funded closed source competitor Loom and it was just a dream for a while but now it’s open source and he makes more money than Loom.

Sublime Team needs to have some vision.

(And yes, I am angry because of that fcking popups that started showing. Don’t make me think about how to download the last version that I had a fcking “licenese” to (BARF!!!), seriously might as well call me your slave and change “license” to “leash”.)

Disgusting.

I’m a cunt hair away from searching Git for best open source Sublime Competitor and then will personally email every paying Sublime Customer if I have to and convince them to switch.

Cap.so is interesting. I will park it for a Docker/VM application. Regretably I still must use stonemason tools. “Ubuntu 22.04 is not supported”. But I shall try it.

sublime text/merge have gotten so much worse with these stupid popups

Our nags haven’t changed since at least the release of ST3 and for the entire lifetime of Sublime Merge. The only thing we have changed is the update dialog, which has a better UI and shows less frequently.

Richie is from UK and started Cap against hugely funded closed source competitor Loom and it was just a dream for a while but now it’s open source and he makes more money than Loom.

Loom sold for close to a billion dollars. When it did so it had a ARR of $50M. It has 8 million downloads on the chrome store. Cap is free to use and has 10k downloads on the chrome store. Cap looks like a cool project, but it is certainly making nowhere near as much as Loom.

Cap’s business model primarily depends on providing services instead of selling their software. We don’t have a service to sell; our software updates are funded directly by people paying for them. And so our incentives are aligned with bettering our software, rather than focusing on selling services.

There’s also some weirdness with Cap’s free version that they claim disallows commercial usage, but that would be in violation of the AGPL license of their own codebase.

In any case, this discussion has been had before in a much more professional manor. If you don’t like our terms there’s plenty of competitors out there that you could use instead of posting vulgar comments on our forum.
