Why pay for Sublime text license?

#25

I believe we have to forget about the lifetime license days…most of the applications are today subscriptions-only — monthly/yearly…which is usually more expensive.

Well… First of all, that’s your belief and it’s fine. However, as with any belief you can chose to believe in anything you want. The catch is, it doesn’t make it true though. Given the world of software, your eco system the “most applications” can be very different and thus for some it can be 100% for some it can be 0% subscription based.

Again, the only point which is raised is the utmost surprise when a user realises how much he needs to pay for a renewal.

I’m not sure where you’re getting that number from. Renewal of a ST license is 20% less.

If you’re talking about Sublime Text in particular, rather than software in general, the renewal pays for updates beyond the end of the three year period that you initially paid for.

In the case of Sublime Text, after your three year period is over the software continues to work. It’s not like you have to pay again immediately or your stuffed.

Also, when is the surprise? Is it at prior to making your initial purchase, or when you realise your three years are up? If the latter, don’t you have only yourself to blame for it being a surprise? If the former, does that not become a factor in your decision to buy the product in the first place?

I’ve just updated my ST and SM licenses to support the developers and keep my favorite coding and writing tools up-to-date.

You guys are all so cutting edge.

I have an old MacBook Pro 13" 5,5 (2009) that I carry around for note writing and meetings. It still runs the latest ST4 and SM2.

Zed does not work on it, and that is the only competition SM has, period. Everything else is like swimming through porridge.

So I pay.

Purchasing a license helps fund further development of Sublime Text. By buying a license, you contribute to ongoing updates, new features, bug fixes, and overall maintenance of the software. Since Sublime Text is developed by a small team, user support directly impacts its ability to grow and improve.
