Why does this simple snippet not work?

I have the snippet below save in ~/Library/Application Support/Sublime Text 3/Packages/User/My Snippets. After not being able to get it to work in a markdown file, I changed it to text.plain, then opened a .txt file. Sublime says “Plain Text” at the bottom right of the screen. Yet whey I type xxx then tab, nothing happens. I also tried making the trigger xxx/, but that did not work either.

HELLO SNIPPET xxx text.plain

Noob mistake. I did not give the saved snippet file a .sublime-snippet extension. After I renamed the file:

/Library/Application Support/Sublime Text 3/Packages/User/MySnippets.sublime-snippet

It worked!
