Great software! But, I need to be able to turn off spell check. It is really annoying for those of us who do not write english lyrics as commit messages.

have you tried the Preferences menu -> Edit Commit Message Settings and adding "spell_check": false,?

I did not realize that the setting had to be in Commit Message Settings
