Is the owner of the source directory the same user? Otherwise the user simply cannot write to that directory without root. I’m currently on holidays; I can do further investigation when I get back.

The owner of the source directory is the versioning control system, you are correct, as the user I do not have the rights to write to that directory, that is why the Sublime client has to prompt that I cannot write when I try to save, which currently does not happen.

That sounds like Sublime Text is doing the right thing here. Does Sublime Text 3 also prompt?
