Sublime and SFTP

#1

Hi

Started having some problems with Dreamweaver and wow - talk about every cloud has a silver lininig - Sublime is awesome!
Before purchasing the licence(s) I wanted to test out the migration from DW to Sublime and I have a question about SFTP.

I couldnt find a forum for the SFTP plugin so I hope its ok to post here, I did browse the forum but couldnt find any help.

My QUESTION ------------------

How do I add extra security to my FTP settings?

At the moment, it seems that anyone who wants to, can simply go to my sftp-config.json file and open in notepad and see all my server settings and password. Doesnt seem very secure :astonished:

Thanks

If you care about security (which is a good thing!) you should use SFTP and SSH keys. Dreamweaver stores your passwords on disk in such a format they can easily be recovered also, they are just slightly obfuscated.

Yes, this advice is good but most hosting companies not give possibility to upload own SSH key files :frowning:

It isn’t that hard to find a cheap hosting company that allows SSH access. One of the first examples that comes to mind is Dreamhost.

But yeah, if you are using the FTP protocol, your password is sent in the clear anyway.

At some point in the future I’d like to hook into the Keychain on OS X and maybe the gnome keychain for Linux. I believe there is also a crypto system on Windows I could use to encrypt the password, it would just require changes to how your auth is set up. The unfortunate aspect is that I have a day job and also run Package Control, so I am kind short on time.

Thanks everyone.

I will try and do some reading on SFTP (I only learnt about it via a youtube video).

Also, just to check Im not too confused, is the SSH you refer to the same as the SSH Keys I would use in something like BitBucket?

Im a bit confused.

My only experience of SSH is with SSH keys where I used puttygen to create a ‘key’ which allows me to upload/download files to BitBucket without needing to use a password.

Is this related?

All the videos I see reference Linux. I am a Windows user :frowning:
