"Stopped Working" Event In Windows Reliability Monitor

#1

For a couple of weeks now, the Windows Reliability Monitor on my machine has been listing many Sublime Text critical events. The summary with each event is “stopped working.” I haven’t noticed Sublime stop working, though. I can provide the technical data that is included with the event, if that would help. Note: I haven’t actually noticed Sublime Text stop working in any way. So, I’m not sure what it means by “stopped working.”

Thanks!

it could be useful to share the technical data that is included with the event. Maybe it’s just the indexer or something, which is why nothing visually stops working?

@kingkeith

Here’s the information you requested. I randomly picked a few alerts and they all appear to have the same information.

Update: I uninstalled Sublime and reinstalled it. (I renamed the Sublime folder in the Program Files folder to ensure a fresh install.) I continued to receive the errors. I also attempted to run a standalone version of the app and that had the same errors.

I’m also beginning to see “plugin_host.ex” “stopped working” messages.

Another note: I renamed the C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Sublime Text 3\ directory so that Sublime would create a new one when I started it. Sublime did create a new one but the same messages appeared in the reliability monitor.

are you using any anti-virus software? maybe it is responsible for killing the plugin host?

@kingkeith I do thave anti-virus software. It doesn’t appear to be killing the plugin host.

which build of ST are you using? is there a core dump in the C:\Program Files\Sublime Text 3 folder which might contain more details about the crash?

Version 3.2.2, Build 3211

I don’t see any core dump files. I actually never saw ST stop working, even though it reported that it did in Windows Reliability Monitor.

Do the time stamps of the events coincide with you quitting Sublime or putting your machine into Sleep mode or something similar?

@OdatNurd, not that I have noticed. Your question did trigger an idea, though: does this happen when I open a project. Yes! Every time I open a project, two “stopped working” events appear in my Reliability History. Thoughts?

The notion of “Stopped Working” sounds to me something similar to how occasionally when a Windows app is busy and you try to interact with it, you see the window caption briefly have (not responding) added to it.

If that’s the case, it might be some sort of semi-false positive where the monitor is picking up on that. Except for accessing files from a remote file share that takes some time to connect, I’ve never seen Sublime do anything like that. Does it do it for every project? Are they large projects or projects that contain large files?

Something like this sounds distinct from the plugin host app crash event you published above, though. That could be an errant plugin doing something untoward and crashing the plugin host.

My first thought was the same as @kingkeith above though; a virus checker or some other sort of security software interfering with/killing the process, possibly because of what it sees as unusual activity/memory use/etc.

@OdatNurd and @kingkeith, thanks for your help. I haven’t found anything specific and I never notice the app “stop working,” so I will just consider it a “semi-false positive.”

Take care!

I have this exact same problem. I don’t think it’s a false positive. I also run AV (VMware Carbon Black), but it isn’t blocking the application. I also have already tried a full reinstall and deleting appdata content but the issue remains. Sublime is the only app I use that crashes, sucks seeing the errors in reliability history lol

I should also add that these errors occur immediately after opening ST every time (sometimes the st executable doesn’t crash but both plugin executables do every time)
