Status and Control of "Find in Files"

#1

Creating a feature request of Cancel a Find in Files search (the uservoice topic is also very old).

Currently, if you enable “Use Buffer” for “Find in Files”, you can close the “Find Results” tab to kill the search. If using a results panel, there doesn’t seem to be a way to cancel it. I had to determine whether the search is active by watching CPU usage, which is why I’d also like to ask for some sort of status.

A list of requests:

  • A cancel button or X or something like a Yes/No popup when pressing Escape.
  • Status bar activity indicator (not progress, just “busy…”)
  • Status bar line/phantom at the end of the Find Results panel or tab to show activity.
  • Show time duration of the search along with the last line “X matches across Y files”

the fact that a Find in Files search can’t be cancelled by closing the Find Results tab is considered a bug, because it is no longer possible to see the further results:

all the other ideas (except cancelling a search that outputs to a panel instead of to a buffer) can be implemented with a plugin. For inspiration, see
