Spellcheck doesn’t work with curly apostrophes

#1

Words like don’t are marked misspelled, and “adding” them doesn’t work.

It works if you use ' (U+0027 Apostrophe), not (U+2019 Right Single Quotation Mark), but despite Unicode’s naming it’s the latter that’s used in professional writing, and that’s inserted when you type a U+0027 in a text field with “smart punctuation” turned on.

Sadly, this has always been the case. Usually, I convert all curly punctuation to straight because pandoc is so good at understand what is what.

Technically you can fix this by yourself by using a custom dictionary.

I don’t think this works. I tried it and words containing still aren’t recognized. As a sanity check, I did get it to recognize nonsense words without a . The context menu entry “Add {word}” also doesn’t work.

Weird. I wonder whether this is OS-dependent. I am on Windows if that matters.

Maybe, I’m on macOS 13.2.1. I used the preferences line

"dictionary": ["Packages/Language - English/en_US.dic", "Packages/User/test.dic"],

and test.dic file

badword1
don’t
badword2

in UTF-8 with Unix line endings. After restarting Sublime Text, “badword1” and “badword2” were accepted as correctly spelled, and “don’t” still marked misspelled.
