Smerge command line open path issue

For sublime merge 1201
The behavior for opening smerge via the command line on a path seems to have changed.
smerge ./
This will open Sublime Merge without accessing the git repo at that path, so it presents an open dialog and an empty view.
Accessing the sublime merge from sublime text works fine. So weird.

catalina 10.15.3
I think I may have kicked it into working, I re symlinked the binary
