Select files/folders in Sidebar by typing their name

#1

In Windows Explorer, and other similar apps, you can select files/folders by starting to type their name; as you type, it will select a file name that matches text that you are typing. Can that be done when you have Sidebar selected, it will speed us selecting files/folders and general navigation in Sidebar.

I have already posted this in “Technical Support” topic, I tried to change topic category to “Ideas and Feature Requests”, but could not find how. Mods can delete the older post.

Edit

This is for files and folders in the same folder/level. If you have 200 files and 10 of them stars with “r”, you could loop over them by typing letter “r” on the keyboard. If you continue to type name of a specific file it will eventually select that single file.

I am not in Windows, I use Ubuntu. But I do have Windows in a guest laptop. I find it more meaningful to look for content within the files rather than short file names.

I also miss the possibility to search for files in sidebar. It seems like it is overlooked.

Edit: Actually, it is possible with “goto” command (ctrl+p) to search for files in the project/sidebar

Goto Anything (ctrl+p) is the primary intended mechanism to quickly find and open any files in any folder present in sidebar using fuzzy search capabilities.

That’s working pretty well most of the time, but may be a bit overwhelming or cumbersome in large projects in which fuzzy search results in possibly many false positives, despite sidebar already showing a single folder of interest.

Despite probably being a 2nd class citizen, being able to quickly jump to matching files by typing their name in addition to plain cursor navigation would however indeed be a nice sidebar feature addition for those choosing this sort of navigation as their favourite workflow.

I’m using goto for time to time and it’s OK. But selecting file/folder name by typing it, it’s basic feature in almost every file explorer/manager like application.
