May be this is a feature for the git plugins, but it probably requires some API support as well.

No need for api support. This can easily be handled by plugin code.
Should this only search the current file or all files in the git repo?

Uhmmm is there a way to make that optional?
If not, then having the same behaviour for normal search, do it in the current file unless you select “Find in files” would be the most self-documented way.

Well, it would be done with two different commands (or rather the same command with different augments and two entries in the command palette /keymap).
(But I won’t be doing it since I have enough to take care of already, in case you were hoping for that.)
