Safe to buy?

#1

A friend of mine showed me Sublime Text and I am thinking about purchasing a license. It is a very impressive editor!

The only thing holding me back is some concerns about this products future. Could someone please help me out with a few questions?

  1. I have seen many blog- and forum comments about lack of support and a few bugs on Windows, and I also see many, many unanswered questions. Has this situation worsened, or is it getting better? I don’t know the company behind Sublime Text and would like some input on where it’s going, and so on.

  2. Does purchasing give me rights to upgrade to the next version for free? If not, does a major version at least have many bugfix releases?

  3. If I buy version 3, when is the release date for the finished product?

I am a poor student and need to pick the right tool first time around

Thanks you!

  1. Yes, that’s true (to be honest, I never saw all these bugs in ST3, windows …or, better, I never saw any)

  2. Read the FAQ:
    Upgrade Policy
A license is valid for Sublime Text 3, and includes all point updates, as well as access to prior versions (e.g., Sublime Text 2). Future major versions, such as Sublime Text 4, will be a paid upgrade.

  3. No ETA. See point (1).

Try the demo for a while and see if you experience the bugs. I never did whilst on Windows.

I will. The problem is that there are so many bug reports that go unanswered - I hope I don’t hit one of those

I would suggest trying to think of the beta as the actual release you are purchasing, in which case you will have gotten quite a few updates up to now, and hopefully some yet to come. If you look at the track record, when ST2 was finally released, it received only 2 point updates, almost a year apart.

Personally I have never had any big problems with ST2/ST3 beta, they have worked very well for my uses.
