Right Click > Create Local Branch

When you right click on a remote branch “Create Local Branch…” should be first option.

OR

A local branch should automatically be created when checking out a remote branch.

I’ve already lost my HEAD a few times by checking out a remote branch without making a local copy.

I agree. You almost never want to check out a detached HEAD, yet that’s the first option on the right-click menu and it’s temptingly named “Checkout [branch name]”. Footgun loaded up and ready to go!
