Paste and insert (i.e. paste over)

I’m using ST3 on Windows.

I have a markdown table with columns already made. How can I paste over the existing spaces (like a mix of paste and insert).

Currently, even in insert mode, the pasted characters are pasted as new characters on the line, rather than over the whitespace on the line.

For tables like those in markdown I found the AlignTab package to be quite useful. It doesn’t do exact what you describe, but instead it automatically aligns all table columns after you modify them.
