Non-fixed width fonts cause problems

Using build 3059 on Mavericks colour schemes (tmTheme) cannot apply fontStyle (i.e. bold or italics) to text, when non-fixed width font used.
The styling is applied correctly when a fixed width font is used.
Forcing bold or italics with user settings works as expected; all text is bold or italicised.
I tested this with Helvetica Neue, Arial, and Lucida Grande. All three have the same issues.

Word wrap with a non-fixed width font is also non-functional. The column size set by the user is seemingly multiplied by an arbitrary value.

Are these known bugs, are there workarounds?

Should I just give trying to use a non-fixed width font?

Same lack of bold and italic font styling for me, with proportional fonts. I’d love to see a solution to this.

On the word wrapping, though, I always turn on Automatic length, and this works OK for the proportional width fonts I use (mainly Avenir).
