Newbie question on open a file and tabs

simple question: when I open a file, by clicking on it in the left panel, the newly opened file replaces my current tab instead of opening a new tab. Is there a setting I must set to change this behavior?

Note that if I slide the tab to the right, the file then appears under ‘open files’ and, at that point, a newly open file then opens in a new tab.

Running latest update of sublime text 3, under os x 10.9 on a MacBook

ok…solved my own question by looking at another thread…turns out I am getting the preview…need to double click to get the behaviour I want
