New license policy?

#1

Hi everybody,

I noticed that the Sales FAQ page (https://www.sublimetext.com/sales_faq) now states the following:

Expiration Date
Licenses purchased for Sublime Text 3 do not expire, however an upgrade fee will be required for Sublime Text 4.

Last time I checked the license was valid for 3 years, after which you didn’t get updates anymore. I’m assuming they changed their policy and now every major version will require a new license, but the license for the purchased version never expires and I can still receive updates after 3 years, am I right? Is this how it works now for both Sublime Text and Sublime Merge?

Thanks!

That part of the page hasn’t changed since its inception (exception for the major version numbers), here’s the web archive from 2012 stating the same thing for ST2 → ST3 licenses: https://web.archive.org/web/20120204212834/https://www.sublimetext.com/sales_faq. You may be confusing the page with Sublime Merge’s, which does have the expiry: https://www.sublimehq.com/sales_faq.

That being said, we are going to transition to the expiry model with Sublime Text 4, but as that hasn’t been announced yet the sales page hasn’t been updated yet.

Hi,

yes, I think I was confusing the page with Sublime Merge’s one. Thanks for the clarification about this.

In your defense, the buy page states it explicitly as well:

Hi,

thank you, that’s why I was confusing things. I know I read it somewhere, regarding ST.

So to recap, both ST (from v4) and SM have the 3 years expiry model.
