Native look and feel on macOS 27

Hi folks, first off, thank you for Sublime Merge. It sits on its own monitor as I develop and I wouldn’t want to be without it (just upgraded as my 3-years had expired).

I also just upgraded to Golden Gate and while I see that 2132 has a change log entry for updating the window for macOS 27, I just wanted to say that it still doesn’t look native and sticks out among all the other windows. Mostly because of the lack of spacing in the title bar and the non-native tab bar elements, etc.

Previously, I was on Sequoia (skipped Tahoe entirely) and it wasn’t that big a deal but it really looks inconsistent with their new design language (like it or not; personally, I’m glad they toned it down in 27).

In any case, would you consider at least making the padding in the title bar consistent with native apps? (Tab bar, etc. is likely a far greater task.)

Given it sits stating at me all day, it would be nice if it blended in a bit more with the rest of the system.

This is standard macOS behavior. Applications with buttons in the title bar have larger margins around the traffic lights:

In this screenshot you have Sublime Text, Finder, Terminal, Safari and TextEdit. Sublime Text matches the style of Terminal and TextEdit because we don’t have any buttons in the title bar.

Thanks, I stand corrected (not that I agree with Apple’s design decision on this either – it’s internally and visually inconsistent . but you’re right, Sublime Merge is consistent with their inconsistency)

I think what threw me off were the tabs, mostly, but I just discovered that Sublime Merge supports two different types of tabs on macOS (native and custom).

I was able to update the configuration file so that it doesn’t convert native tabs to windows on relaunch – this feels like a bug in the default behaviour, by the way – by setting "native_tabs": "preferred" and that’s made it feel more native although I don’t understand why the native tabs aren’t the default and there are two different workflows for opening repositories in tabs.

If I had a feature request, it would be at least to be able to make the repository open functionality (Open Repository, Open Recent, etc.) use native tabs and disable custom tabs altogether so I don’t have to use a different workflow for opening repositories (Window → New Tab). (Especially if I am using native tabs and then I forget due to muscle memory and use open repository and then I have a custom tab under my native tab.)

PS. I guess, in general, a little bit of extra padding and rounded corners on elements would make Sublime Merge look more native on macOS but I can understand if that’s not a huge priority given limited resources. (And, with system tabs, it feels integrated enough that it doesn’t actively stick out for me.
