MacOs dictation: formatting commands not recognized

#1

When using MacOS speech to text (“dictation”) in Sublime, formatting commands like “new line” or “new paragraph” don’t work properly – these work fine in the Mac TextEdit editor.

The behavior in Sublime is strange: it is inserting what appear as two or three spaces in response to those commands in the same way as TextEdit, but when the document is saved, those are stripped out.

No difference in safe mode. Is there something in one of the preference/settings files that could be causing this?

I agree - this is a major problem for me and the single reason I keep going back to BBEdit which I actually consider inferior in so many other ways. Unfortunately this spacing error is a deal breaker for me because I use the dictation constantly throughout my work day

Today, with Sublime Text 4180 and MacOS Sequoia 15.2, this is still an issue.

As a matter of fact, dictation in Sublime Text has a number of issues:

  • some commands are not writing anything (new line and new paragraph)
  • switching dictation language is not possible in Sublime Text (the dictation icon show an up arrow next to the mic, instead of the dictation language, which is weird). Work around: focus on a different application, enable dictation and change the language, then focus back on Sublime Text.
