Is it possible to add new buttons to the bottom bar?

Is it possible to add new buttons or menus to the bottom bar, where the encoding and syntax pickers are placed? If so, how?

As far as I’m aware there’s no way to customize the status bar other than adding your own textual items in the left hand side, so it’s not possible to add new menu buttons at all.

You can generally get away with adding items to the menus that are already there, although that seems somewhat awkward since in most cases whatever you were adding wouldn’t logically go with the other contents available in those menus.
