Is 8 GB of RAM Good Enough for Sublime Text

#1

I wanted to get the cheapest 2018 MacBook Air, and I’m wondering if it’s good enough to handle projects in Sublime Text with hundreds of folders and thousands of lines of text? I like using Sublime Text for macOS with Markdown Editing for notes, journals, and prose. This MacBook Air will be a glorified typewriter. I’m used to working with 16 GB or more, so I wanted to get a second opinion based on someone’s experience using less RAM.

I’ve purchased Sublime Text 3.0 and Sublime Merge, and I’m loving every minute of them. Thank you for making stellar apps!

Here is the MacBook Air build I’m considering:

  • 1.8 - 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core Processor

  • 8GB DDR3 RAM

  • 128GB SSD

  • Integrated Intel HD Graphics 6000

  • macOS Mojave

I currently have Sublime open to a project which contains thousands of nested directories, several hundred thousand lines of code in multiple languages (millions, actually, given some compiled artifacts), tens of thousands of files. Even more saliently, I have over a hundred files currently open, since I tend to never close things.

It’s using 570 MB of RAM right now. You’ll be fine.

Thank you, @djspiewak! I appreciate your feedback because it helped me make a decision. I bought the Mac with 8 GB of RAM, and it’s working extremely well.

it’s not visual studio code, so yes it’s more than enough
