Insert (Ins) keeps turning off randomly (ST3)

Hi,
I have been doing a lot of editing of a JavaScript file. I have been commenting out parts of code and then uncommenting them. At some point, Insert gets turned off (on its own) and I start randomly overwriting my code. Sometimes I don’t even catch the error until I have overwritten a whole string of keywords. This has never happened before with any other editor and it’s driving me crazy.
What’s going on?
I do have
“ignored_packages”: [“Vintage”],
in my user settings.
