How does one change this behavior? Is there a setting in user preferences?

In Sublime Text 3, tapping on a position in a line selects the entire line rather than focusing on the position for editing

What input method are you referring to when you say “tapping”? By default, a single mouse click will move the selection caret to the position you click on. Maybe you have a plugin overriding this behavior?

By tapping I meant clicking on the position (tapping on a laptop touchpad). Oddly, this behavior has just stopped and things are back to normal – I have no idea why. The issue resolved itself spontaneously after a few days. A Sublime Text 3 or plugin bug? No idea.
