"Hot exit" mess

#1

Hi there

I’ve been trying to configure ST’s behavior on startup / shutdown (on Linux) for a while, with no success. What I’d like it to do, what I think is most natural, is the following:

  • If I explicitly close a window using the window manager’s (X) button, then I want that window gone forever, no matter if it was the last ST window left open or not. The next time I launch ST, it should open a blank window.
  • Instead, if ST crashes or is killed, or if the X server or the OS is shut down, then I want ST to remember what windows and files were open at the time of the crash and restore them, including unsaved modifications (which as we know, ST is fully capable of doing.)

Can anybody please recommend a combination of settings and/or plugins to achieve this, on Linux? Because I’ve been trying for a while and I cannot seem to get this simple behavior working properly.

I use ST as a “side-editor”, in addition to more heavyweight IDEs, so I’m constantly opening and closing ST windows from the terminal. Every time I open ST it restores a bunch of windows that I had explicitly closed, and it drives me nuts!

We’ve got an extra option for the "hot_exit" setting in the pipeline for this behavior.

In the ST4 beta there’s "hot_exit": "only_on_quit".
