[FREQ] All-{sc,t}heme font size overrides

#1

Can we please get some easy/direct means to set font face/size overrides that apply regardless of what schemes/themes we might have installed/active? Like a special filename containing the Variables/Rules overrides that is always applied after all Scheme/Theme contents?

To be clear, I understand the “how to do it” part. Unfortunately, having to constantly make scheme/theme-specific overrides is a pain, and worse, I wind up having to use different values for sizing on Win, Linux and Mac because of the different ways they handle display DPI/HD/scaling. Having to generate three separate versions of the overrides for the different platforms for every single scheme/theme I might use is pretty onerous.

If it were three total, I’d be a lot less bothered, but three per scheme/theme is too much work, and I find myself using other editors more and more despite loving ST4 more just over the legibility issue.

Thanks!

I’ll even go a step further, and suggest maybe it even makes sense to put typefaces and sizes under the user’s global control, period. I can’t speak for others, but when I typically think of “styling”/“theming”, I think colors and even weights/attributes. However, because they’re so critically tied to legibility, I really don’t consider font/typeface or sizes as part of “scheme/theme styling”, and get annoyed whenever a theme redefines the actual typefaces or sizes.

If you insist on a spread of size options available for syntax, etc. then let users define typeface, and 3/5 size options – for 3: sm/default("")/lg; for 5: tiny(ti)/sm/default("")/lg/xl), then have the system set up those as variables automatically. Schemes/themes always use the variables for size selection. If you want, give them a way to select face/etc. for special glyph fonts, but even there use the same sizing set in the variables.

Just another suggestion of how the earlier request could be solved. As I get older, I need relatively larger fonts. I’m not a fan of legibility of the actual text for editing being so tightly-coupled to scheming/theming. What I don’t want is an ongoing commitment to heavy customization over and over with new or updated schemes just to maintain legibility of my editing. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for reading this far, and please know, I deeply appreciate nigh-all of the work done to improve ST & SM over the years. Thank you all for all your efforts.

I am sure I am missing something face-palmingly obvious, but I simply set font-face and size in my ST preferences, and all schemes and themes honour this.

I know that I have probably massively missed the point, but …

Alas, you are indeed missing something. Open your sidebar, command-bar, or list of packages for install. Here, at least, they do not obey those settings.
