Formatting inconsistent

I have Sublime 3.2.2 installed, and I get inconsistent display results.
Nothing I do with the preferences seems to help.
With the setting at XML, I expect to see formatting that is on top:
When I load another file, I get what is displayed on the bottom

I have spent hours trying changes to preferences without success.
Is there a way to copy setting that work?

I didn’t do an experiment but you should make the “bottom” image highlighted as XML first before doing reindent.

ST’s auto indentation (reindent) seems to only care about indentation (which is really naive). It’s not a “formatter”, “beautifier”, or “prettifier”. If your source is one line, it basically does nothing.

Both say XML in the lower right corner of the screen.

presumably your file consists of one long line - prettifying it using a third party plugin as @jfcherng mentioned could indeed help
