First Tab press, takes 30 hits to move cursor

each time I open a document (sublime is already running),
I have to hit ‘Tab’ 20, 30 times to get the cursor to move 2 spaces, the first time.
successive Tabs move cursor with each Tab press.
I have ‘auto-completion’ set to false.
This has been an issue for me for some time now.
Sublime Text Build 4143
openSuSE 15.4.x (current, up to date, patched)
KDE 5.24.x (current, up to date, patched)

i don’t see under alt+file, alt+tools
will it wipe out history and current session?
