Easy vertical split panes using ctrl/cmd?

#1

Hi! I’m unable to find anything regarding this (but I don’t quite know how to word it, so it’s hard to find).

I recently got a vertical monitor (it’s awesome for code!) but the usual ctrl+click (to temporarily open multiple files at the same time) still open them side by side. Is there a setting to open them on top of each other (as “rows” instead of “columns”)?

Thanks !

There is not a setting for that, no; the join together in the group that they’re currently inside of.

For your use case you would need to split the window horizontally (View > Layout > Rows: 2 for example) and move the tab to the other group.

The Origami package has commands for shuffling views between groups that can come in handy for thing like this, allowing you to use the keyboard instead of the mouse to do it.

I see. I don’t keep multiple panes all the time, but I need to compare files a few times a day. The ctrl+click was awesome for that, allowing me to compare non-opened files. Changing the whole layout and moving the files in the right group each time is not quite the same.

Anyways, I’ll check if I can put that as a feature requests somewhere and try to find some combination of keyboard shortcuts to help me with that. I’ll start with the origami package, as you suggested. I fear it’ll mess with my almost neatly-organized-sidebar (which I keep kind of organized by task but not quite), but I’m sure I can find a way to make this work.

Thanks for your time!
