Disabling search-as-you-type

#1

I would like to stop the search function (/box) from moving me around in my document before I have pressed return. For, this gets in the way of how I work. However, I cannot discover how to do this.

Assuming you’re using the regular Find panel and not the Incremental Find panel, one way to go about that would be to turn off the Highlight matches option in the find panel. It’s the button immediately to the left of the text input box. Hovering your mouse over it will show you a tooltip to let you know you’ve hit the correct one.

This won’t work in the Incremental Find panel though, which is meant to do exactly the thing you don’t want to do.

Another option would be to use Find in Files, with the Where: field set to <current file> (you can use the button to quickly add this). That would let you search for all matches in the current file and see them all at once. Depending on your screen layout it can help to turn off the option to show results in a buffer so that you can see the results in a panel and navigate between them a little easier.

Well, much of that is rather involved, but turning off the (misnamed?) ‘highlight matches’ toggle does the trick. Thank you.
