The issue is being known https://github.com/SublimeTextIssues/Core/issues/2488.
But a quick trick to work around the issue is executing env GDK_BACKEND=x11 subl.

does this make my session use X11 or just fool certain apps into thinking it is using X11?

also, this did not work for me - still failure to launch

I think it only sublime will use x11 for this session.
What happens if you execute subl -w?

strange it looks like this bug. Does it work if you delete the license file (~/.config/sublime-text-3/Local/License.sublime_license) and start again?

You can go to the download page and copy the URL for the package format you use and change 3181 to 3180. Alternatively, you can switch to the stable channel.

that works or at least it pops up the “enter your license” dialog

and then everytime i do “apt update” i will have to repeat?

switching to the stable channel does not show anything for download since it is an earlier version

what is the ETA on a fix for this?

I would lock at 3180.

You would have to remove it and then you could install the older version.

I’m not sure, but I just downloaded Fedora 29 since I’ve heard that you can reliably replicate the issue there.

Experiencing this here in Ubuntu 18.10 as well. Had to manually downgrade back to version 3180.

Edit: the new 3182 build fixes the problem for me!
