Price for new is $168
Price for upgrade after 3 years is $152. I have to admit I usually have to think about upgrades after they get over 50%, and over 60% - I really have to think really hard about how I use something and if it is worth it.

Itās $4.25 per month for both ST & SM, so $2.13 / month for each.
I guess most peoples electricity bill for running a PC or mobile costs are way higher in same period.
Anyway, upgrades are not enforced.
Your current license is valid forever enclosing all releases covered by the 3 years.
My primary IDE costs more than 2000 / year
Your right, I have probably close to 100 apps (I know too many, I have started start removing apps if I find I donāt use them too often - rather than upgrading them) and for the most part I upgrade them without even thinking about whether the new features are right for me. It does not make sense to pay the equivalent for a new license for āanotherā editor (I have a number for different purposes - this is primarily SQL). Although I like Sublime Text, I donāt find myself missing features that might or might not be there. I just set MacUpdate to ignore the app now and maybe I will revisit it in 3 years if there are sufficient changes then to basically pay for a new license. I had a chuckle about you using basically a subscription model to show how little it actually isā¦ I have only one subscription app, the rest I delete as they move to subscription models.
Renew license price is a bit high isnāt it. I appreciate the devs for the continuous output and awesome product.
Although personally the updates are a bit at the infrequent side which makes me think getting updates within the 3 year period is kind of hit and miss. (it may make sense from product pov to ship it with big updates, myself personally wants update more frequent. just me)
I have been paying and now I need to renew. Truth is I donāt use sublime every week, but great to have it under my belt. I really want to support you guys but the price is not justified for me personally. May just wait out a couple years to get another 3 year license maybe.
Great work and good luck
Iām sick and tired of fanboy apologist chiming every time someone raises objectively valid point. I have been using Sublime for the last 15 years and this is the first time Iām going to leave a message here.
@deathaxe good for you, please keep it to yourself, not all people have the same income or opportunity to pay the same amount.
The āupgradeā price is way too expensive for what it is.
Not sure if youāre aware we have a development branch that has more frequent updates.
Iām just sick and tired of parasites which think all software is created as hobby side project, ignoring people work to pay their bills! You are the lucky one, if you donāt need to earn money with your everyday work.
Actually sublimehq is very mermissive compared to most other professional software companies, with regards to licensing and locking up their tools. As a company most professional tools cost money - just donāt be blinded by some big tech companies providing them for free for personal use to honey-pot and lock you in.
You can use your license forever. Noone forces you to upgrade.
Chill, mate, no need to call users parasites. We all need to earn money and we donāt eat sublime merge or text, so people have a right to share an opinion without being insulted. This insult is far from constructive, tbh Iām disappointed that this is the level of discussion here. You may agree or disagree whether upgrade is expensive or not, I didnāt upgraded not because I donāt have money for it but a) there are different priorities in life and if your IDE costs 2k (probably paid by company) or your car is 30k - doesnāt mean that the price of milk should be the same. And b) - over 3 years of license Iāve seen not many significant upgrades and they are too infrequent, so I see no value in upgrade that costs me $150 for that frequency.
Sublime tools are like good ol knife but I canāt justify another 150 for some handle polish, itās not fundamentally better than my old one. Am I a parasite now too because Iām not throwing paycheck your way ?
You sir, need to get yourself checked, something is obviously wrong.
@centur I wholeheartedly agree with everything you wrote.
And that is what I chose to do - roll back to a version that I was covered for, and now I am a parasite? You are not being a good Ambassador for Sublime.
I am confused too. No updates for 6 month no less and then āupgrade requiredā?
Yes there is a dev channel, but I did not sign up to be beta-tester and pay for the privelege.
The difference between subscirption model and not is that I could not install next version of Photoshop for example in 2003 and could just use the old one. Here its the same app. Its a subscription model and I would appreciate if it was called so clearly.
Can we rollback to prior version and keep registered status? (I suspect yes, https://www.sublimehq.com/sales_faq).
While I realize thereās no enforcement for licensing, itās unethical to use latest without purchasing, which Iāve no intention of doing at this time. Iāve transitioned to using 10xEditor the past couple years, supporting Stuart throughout development and continue to do so. Heās responsive, updates are frequent, and the editor symbol and search features are lighting fast for large code bases such as unreal. As such Iām finding myself infrequently using Sublime. Still a great editor.
I updated and got a very faint unregistered mark at the top (using MacUpdater). I then looked at the overall price and decided it was not worth it at this time and for the same ethical reasons I rolled back (through the download page) the last version I had and installed it. The unregistered watermark at the top has gone. It was very faint, but I figured it would become less faint after a certain period of time. I will still use it for SQL code and scripts, but that is about it for now (using XCode more for SwiftUI related stuff, and playing around with Zedā¦ and I have an active license up until next year for everything Jetbrains - though the only I am primarily only using it for Rust so I will probably downgrade that one). I am a confused editor personā¦
I also initially thought the upgrade cost was high, or rather that there was no real benefit in upgrading above purchasing a new license and having two licenses.
But the licensing terms are so permissive there is virtually no advantage in having two separate licenses in this way.
I renewed because itās worth every penny.
@deathaxe is right that the relationship between consumers and producers of software has essentially become parasitic. Most consumers have been encouraged to expect things to be free without liability or consequence; most producers encourage that mindset because the long term plan is to farm them like mobs for their organs and whatever else they can get away with.
