Color of non-data area

#1

I’m not exactly sure how to describe my goal, but I’ll give it a shot.

I would post a screenshot of what I’m trying to do, because I believe I achieved it in Notepad++ at one point, but I can’t remember which laptop and which installation of Notepad++ had the configuration I’m looking for.

What I’m NOT looking for: changing the background color of either: 1) tokens recognized by syntax highlighting, or just plain tokens or space characters in the default scheme.

What I am looking for is to have the background color of the editor, where the panel extends beyond any text loaded in the editor, to be a different, slightly darker and more muted color that the background of the text being edited.

Showing whitespace characters gets me the usual workaround that I’ve been using for years, but I prefer to use “show whitespace” only when I want to distinguish between spaces and tabs. So, I want to turn that off most of the time, but I still want to see where text exists, and where text does not exist in the editor panel.

Actually, I have a great way to describe what I’m looking for. I want the same effect as “selected text”, except ALL THE TIME, and with a background color of my choosing. (Different than the background color for actual selected text, obviously)

Maybe there is some option for this in the preferences, but I’m just not recognizing the nomenclature.

Thanks!
