Something tells me this is directwrite
related stuff. It seems that Sublime Text needs option to choose between “directwrite” and “gdi” for UI on Windows.
I find the same issue in Build 3129. But when I rollback ST to 3126, no such issue.
Yes, unfortunately there are some issues where DirectWrite doesn’t do glyph fallback like GDI does. I’m going to be looking into this some today.
I would love to have an option to get the old GDI rendering for the GUI (not only the text area) back.
Yes, it is a complex situation. Many fonts look far, far better with direct write, such as Operator, Roboto, etc. But I realize there are other fonts, at specific sizes and color combinations where gdi gives a stronger feel. Generally GDI is a dead end, and doesn’t work for high DPI. We wanted a better experience out of the box, but it gets complex when the proportional font in the theme looks better with GDI, but the monospace editor font looks better with direct write.
As I mentioned above, I am going to be spending some time over the next day or two working on the fonts issue, in general.
I find when using the GDI setting together with the MacType font renderer, fonts look even better than when using DirectWrite. And not all of us use a monospaced editor font either
So here is an example of Ubuntu Condensed in the side bar and status bar. GDI+MacType:
And here is how it looks with the new DirectWrite:
The editor area uses a proportional font with GDI+MacType in both screenshots and looks the same.
I prefer the first (Build 3125) user interface screenshot.
Using GDI+MacType
and think GDI+MacType
looks far better than DirectWrite
on my PC.
