Can't figure out how word wrap works

#1

I’ve been trying to figure out how the different word wrap settings work in ST3.

I start a new plain text file. Under the view word wrap is checked, the word wrap column is set to automatic, and I’ve set the ruler to be at 80 characters.

I type a bunch of text and blast right by the ruler. I thought automatic was tied to the ruler position, but apparently I’m wrong. After a little more searching, I find the wrap-paragraph-at-ruler option under the edit menu and so I turn that on.

I resume typing and again I blast right by the ruler.

How do I make the wrap-at-ruler setting stick? What does the automatic setting in the wrap-column menu mean?

word wrap column needs to be set to force the word wrap, the ruler is just there for a visual guide.

In your Preferences -> Settings - User file, set

	"wrap_width": 80

and you should be all set.

If I have to set a user preference, then what’s the point of the wrap options under the edit menu? Do they do anything?

You can set the word_wrap column via the menu settings if you’re OK with one of the presets. You’ve stated that you have word_wrap set to ‘automatic’ which will wrap based on window size, not the ruler. The ruler is for visualizing where the column is, word_wrap is for actually forcing this, so, in the menu settings where you have it set to automatic, just set it to the column, and use the User Settings file if you don’t like the presets.
