Best Monokai Theme as of today?

#1

I love Monokai, but when I use Craft Twig or Statamic Antlers syntax I need more Color variations. Is there a more advances Monokai with more color options? Or is there an easy way to tweak a color scheme?

Anyone using Monokai Pro or other Monokai variant they like better?

I like monokai pro but the color scheme is a bit broken for me sometimes. What I did is the following: I took the default mariana theme and changed colors accordingly to Monokaiyish colors. Therefore I’m in sync with the latest theme changes (as basing it of an official theme). Works for me quite fine.

Monokai

There are many “monokai” color schemes, take a pick: https://packagecontrol.io/search/monokai

If you’re on Build 3149+ and want to customize your scheme:

  • you can convert those files to the new *.sublime-color-scheme or *.hidden-color-scheme file format based upon JSON.
  • then maybe add a few variables at the top and reference them similar to how the new default color schemes do it. Compare for example Tools > Command Palette > View Package File: Color Scheme - Default/Monokai.sublime-color-scheme

A few side notes:

  • not every color scheme labeled “monokai” will give you the colors you’d expect.
  • other color schemes with other random names will give you the monokai colors, too. I wont list them here.
  • most popular color schemes out there all circle around the same few groups of colors. If you want to customize a color scheme with a license that restricts you too much (for your taste), find another one.

With regard to Monokai Pro:

Looking at https://www.monokai.pro/sublime-text/ it is apparent that those new “monokai” color schemes use similar colors to:

I don’t see any reason for using and paying for Monokai Pro. Whatever works for you, though.

I use Monokai Pro and love it.

Understandably anyone that refuses to pay for anything is going to be less than impressed by it though but i see no harm in supporting the people that create the things that i use.

@nblackburn Your implication that I’m refusing to pay for anything is ridiculous. I have never used that package for the above reasons. Next time, please (implicitly) quote me as having said "... don't see any reason for USING AND paying for ...".

I would humbly suggest my custom dark theme. Not Monokai, but somewhat related. Supports a LOT more scopes. Uses the new .sublime-color-scheme format, easily hackable.

https://github.com/Mitranim/sublime-themes. The dark theme is called Nether. Feel free to copy and customize.

(Note: this requires at least version 3149 of Sublime.)

Perhaps i would if it was aimed at you but it was more of a blanket statement to all of the freeloaders that expect everything for free and give nothing back.

MonokaiFree is the best. Because it’s free.

MonokaiFree is indeed very close to ST’s default Monokai color scheme but supports all current syntax scopes and is actively maintained. Means if you miss something opening an appropriate issue on GitHub will most likely help to get it included.

Of course I’m biased, but I really tried my best to create the best (Monokai) color scheme and color theme.

After creating the original Monokai 11 years ago for Textmate, (and after I saw it got remixed a lot by others), I saw that I could improve on color harmony, on syntax highlighting completeness, and on super sharp icons.

I tried my best to create one integrated experience, specifically designed to minimize all clutter and to let you focus on your work: https://www.monokai.pro
