In all the open text files, each instance of the letter ‘i’ has a rectangle round it. Why is this? I have a Vim emulator installed - could this be the source of the issue?

There could be a couple of reasons for something like that. Since it’s happening to you in a text file, my guess would be that you have the Highlight Matches option turned on in the Find panel and did a search (on purpose or accidentally) for the letter i; that would result in all of the other matches being outlined as well.
If that’s the case then closing the find panel would make them go away.
Otherwise, the next most likely suspect is a plugin or package of some kind.
