Absolute Rectangular Select

In Notepad++, you can do an absolute rectangular select with Alt + Left click, adding some temporary whitespace:

Sublime Text does not do this, it will only select the latest character in a row. Sometimes this is desirable, but sometimes it isn’t.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

I believe you are talking about Virtual space.

Apparently there used to be a plugin that could do it, but now it’s gone?

It looks like that. But I don’t think a plugin can do it well due to API limitaion.
