4180 by default opens in ADMIN mode

#1

Hi,

I am using windows power toys to remap some key bindings, and when using sublime text 4180 on my work windows machine it by default runs with the window title being (ADMIN / UNREGISTERED) which negates the remapping of keys through powertoys on windows. I did not change any settings to let sublime text run as an admin, and I should not even have admin privileges on my machine, however for some reason after installing sublime text it runs with ADMIN on by default. Weirdly I would expect that for sublime text to run in ADMIN mode I would need to enter the admin password, but I do not even get the prompt to enter the admin password. Please let me know how I can run sublime text without ADMIN or elevated privilages.

Thanks

That’s certainly something handled by operating system. ST doesn’t require or start with admin privileges by default.

You may want to check application compatibility settings in application properties dialog. Most likely “Run program with admin priviledges” checkbox is set.

I think you may be right. But I can’t figure out what is forcing the application to open in ADMIN mode. Looking at the properties for both the Sublime Text shortcut and the main application (in Program Files), both of them do not have the “Run this program as an administrator” box checked. Neither do I get the “Run As Administrator” pop up when open Sublime Text which is why it is really confusing as to why it runs in ADMIN mode.

Thanks for the reply though @deathaxe

I do not use Windows Power Toys. However, I use Autohotkey to create key-bindings that open specific projects in ST. At some point I had to run Autohotkey with admin rights, so that Windows would not block some things unrelated with ST. The problem is that once you run Autohotkey with admin rights, programs opened by it such as ST would also be run with admin rights.

In short, is it possible to run Windows Power Toys without admin rights?

Yes it is, that’s how I have setup my single key bindings and shortcut mapping. And since I don’t have admin rights to my machine I can’t use power toys with admin rights. And the key mapping / bindings work on all applications that do not run with admin rights. In my previous work machine (which was a windows 10 machine), I was running sublime text (which was not running with admin rights) and had no issues with using the mapped keys

Just making sure, when you go to PowerToys Settings, General, Administration mode, do you see Running as user, and Always run as administrator off?

If you do, then, unfortunately I do not know what’s happening. Hopefully more advanced members of the community will be able to help you.
