3.8 plugin fails when launching ST 4 from the command line (MacOS 10.14.6)

#1

Update: The problem turned out to be that I was launching ST from the command line. See my follow up post below for more details.

Original post

I have been happily using Sublime text for years, and recently upgraded to Sublime Text 4, and now cannot install any packages. Typing “Install …” in the command palette doesn’t bring up anything. Under the Preferences menu, all but “Browse Packages”, “Font”, “Package Settings” and “Package Control” are greyed out. When I navigate to the sub menu Package Settings->Package Control, nothing comes up.

The only problem that showed up in the console was that the plugin-3.8 didn’t run. So I moved that plugin (from /Applications/Sublime Text/…/bin). Here is the complete console output :

Can you check your ignored_packages setting ? Maybe Package Control has ended up there.

From the console output, it looks like the only ignored packages are :

ignored_packages: ["Makefile", "Vintage"]

But just in case I am missing something, where can I find the ignored_packages setting?

You can just run Preferences: Settings from the command palette and inspect your user preferences. That said, looking at your screenshot, it looks like the 3.8 plugin host has crashed (since some of the menu items are grayed out).

Preferences : Settings doesn’t appear for me :

The 3.8 plugin didn’t run is because I moved it. Before moving it, it was crashing with :

...
OpenGL Context Information:
  GL API Version: 4.1 ATI-2.11.25
  GLSL Version: 4.10
  Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Renderer: AMD Radeon Pro 460 OpenGL Engine
startup time: 0.428731
first paint time: 0.49608
error: plugin_host-3.8 has exited unexpectedly, some plugin functionality won't be available until Sublime Text has been restarted
environment variables loaded using: /opt/local/bin/bash -l (2 skipped due to non-utf8 data)
reloading python 3.3 plugin 0_package_control_loader.00-package_control
reloading python 3.3 plugin 0_package_control_loader.01-pygments
...

I have restarted Sublime multiple times, and even rebooted my Mac several times. Nothing seems to get rid of this error.

BTW, does 3.8 have anything to do with my version of Python? I am only running 3.7.4.

Ah, sorry ! Should have known from the grayed out menu, that you can’t access that as well.

I would suggest to open a ticket on the issue tracker Issues · sublimehq/sublime_text with as much details as you can.

ST bundles it’s own custom Python build that is independent of your system Python. There is no connection between them. The problem is since 3.8 is crashing for you, those menu items are grayed out (since the Default package depends on the 3.8 runtime). As I said above, please open an issue. The dev’s can take a look at it.

I just posted an issue here : https://github.com/sublimehq/sublime_text/issues/4432

It looks like the problem is with how I was launching ST. In MacOS, I typically start ST from the command line, using the executable in /Applications/Sublime Text/.../SharedSupport/subl. However, when I start ST from the Launcher (or the application directory, or a Dock icon), both plugins (3.3 and 3.8) work as expected, and the Preferences menu is restored (no more greyed items). So I think that solves the problem.
