I am having problems not being able to save my coding

Unix based operating systems like MacOS and Ubuntu don't let you save in the root of the file system unless you have special privileges, so trying to save /myfile.html or similar is going to throw a permission denied error. until recently there was a security pop-up to enter my root password, or a little helper file which managed to raise privileges. can you tell me what to do to restore this convenient mechanism?
