So yesterday I installed OS and today I installed Sublime on it. Now without even running it once, I am being asked for license. Until now I had been using Atom, but wanted to give Sublime a try. Why am I being asked for license without any trial period?

It is because you installed the development version of Sublime Text, which requires a licence for use.
You can use the stable version with unlimited trial, you need to download it from here:
