How to make a hotkey to search for a certain string?

There doesn’t seem to be a command for it. The closest I can come to it is opening the find panel, but I don’t see any command to type text there, either. What can I do?

I was looking into this and discovered that it might not be easily possible for a plugin to set the Find What: or Replace With: values, without messing around with the text and selections in the document (slurp_find_string and slurp_replace_string commands), so I have asked a question on SO.

Wow, that’s… extremely unexpected and disappointing. Sounds like a really basic functionality to be missing. I guess I’ll have to instead emulate the keypresses using Autohotkey.
