Forcing enable-replace-in-selection

I’m doing replace in selection repeatedly, and each time I have to check the “in selection” button. Is there a way to make this stick? I’m using ST3 build 3018. I found an old thread that seems pertinent but there’s no resolution, and it seems their problem was the opposite of mine. Is there a setting? Was this behavior changed?
Edit:
Going back to ST2, it looks like it works the way I want. Is this a change in ST3, and if so, is there a setting to revert it?
