OS X's Text to Speech feature isn't working properly in SB 3

#1

I have a rather unique technical issue. There is a feature on Mac OS X called ‘text to speech’ that will speak the currently selected text using a hotkey. However, in Sublime Text 3, instead of reading the selected text, it reads the application’s title-bar. For example, if I have helloworld.hs open, it’ll speak ‘helloworld.hs’.

Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
Sublime Text 3 Build 3083

to replicate this technical issue:

  1. Go to Apple Menu>System Preferences>Dictation & Speech
  2. Check the check-box called ‘Speak selected text when the key is pressed’
  3. enter a key combo (mine is Option+A)
  4. Open a document within sublime text
  5. highlight a portion of that documents text and press the key combo you set from step 3

Any help is appreciated. If anyone knows why this problem occurs, please explain it to me as it occurs in one other application.

There was a discussion about this a while back: Problem with OS X’s text to speech. The Speak Selected Text plugin seems to have helped some users on both ST 2 and 3.

I tried to manually install that in SB 3, but when i right click, the option to ‘speak selected text’ is grayed out. Thanks for the suggestion though.
