Is it possible to automatically save layouts / tab groupings?

I often switch between 2 pane and 1 pane layout. I want it so that when I go from 2 to 1 and back to 2, the tabs in the second column are the same as they were before if the same tabs are opened. Is that possible?

I saw a thread[1] but it was from back in 2012 so I thought it would be worth asking again, don’t know what the forum guidelines are on that.

I just installed MaxPane and it seems to be doing what I want at first glance. Ideally I would have had it merge the panes and then split them back out, but this works as well.
